一般社団法人日本山伏協会とは、山伏の伝統と文化を継承し、普及・発展させることを目的とした団体です。
山伏の修行や教え、歴史や芸能などに関する活動や情報発信を行っています。

山伏とは

山伏とは、日本独自の宗教である修験道の実践者のことです。修験道は、古代日本の山岳信仰に仏教や道教などの要素が混ざりながら成立した信仰形態で、山中で厳しい修行を行って験力（げんりき）と呼ばれる超自然的な能力を身につけることを目的としています12。

山伏は、頭に頭襟（ときん）と呼ばれる帽子、身に篠懸（すずかけ）という麻の法衣、手に錫杖（しゃくじょう）という金属製の杖、口に法螺（ほら）という貝殻の楽器を持ち、山岳の霊場を巡り歩きます13。山伏は、神仏習合の信仰であり、日本の神と仏教の仏がともに祀られる権現や王子などの神格を崇拝します24。

山伏は、日本固有の文化であり、自然と共生する生き方を体現しています。近年、東洋思想に関心を持つ海外の知識層からの注目を集めつつあります。日本でも若い世代の実践者が増えており、修験道の伝統を継承しています。山伏は、日本の宗教文化の一面を示す存在と言えるでしょう。

What is Yamabushi?

Yamabushi are practitioners of Shugendo, a unique religion of Japan that was formed by mixing elements of Buddhism, Taoism, and other beliefs with the ancient mountain worship of Japan. The aim of Shugendo is to acquire supernatural powers called genriki by undergoing rigorous training in the mountains .

Yamabushi wear a hat called tokkin, a hemp robe called suzukake, a metal staff called shakujou, and a shell instrument called hora. They walk around the sacred places of the mountains . Yamabushi follow a syncretic faith that worships both the gods of Japan and the buddhas of Buddhism. They venerate deities such as gongen and ouji, which are combinations of the two .

Yamabushi are a distinctive culture of Japan that embody a way of living in harmony with nature. In recent years, they have attracted attention from overseas intellectuals who are interested in Eastern thought.
